Aquatic Monocot Stem: Stele in Potamogeton

cross section: Potamogeton stem

magnification: 100x

Berkshire Community College Bioscience Image Library

The cortex consists of two zones of photosynthetic parenchyma; a narrow outer zone of packed parenchyma and a deeper broad zone of web like aerenchyma, interspaced with large radially arranged air pockets. Small bundles of sclerenchyma cells stabilize the intersections between intersecting strands of aerenchyma.

The central stele consists of a mass of parenchymal tissues and radially arranged vascular bundles that are capped and wrapped in supportive sclerenchyma.

The vascular bundles contain abundant phloem but true xylem tissues are missing and replaced by water holding chambers or xylem lacunae
