Nimbus-class Heavy Frigate

In the year 2528, After the Velonnian Imperium suffered several of its initial defeats in its war with the GC-backed Khent-sa navy, which resulted in the Imperium's fuel supplies being crippled, the Imperator sought out ways to keep its nearly-immobilized fleets effective.

By the advice of Lord-Admiral Sirius Torstan, additional emphasis was placed on the production of support ships, such as the Nimbus-class Heavy Frigate. The goal was to use them as long-ranged scouting ships, which could alert larger Imperial fleets to enemy movements without expending much fuel.

Emphasis was placed on a small ship that could hold its own against an enemy force long enough to relay the enemy's position to nearby fleets then escape intact. The Nimbus was one of the most-used craft, due to its balance of firepower and resilience to agility, and dozens of craft patrolled the FTL routes between the Imperium's vulnerable Coreward worlds on a constant basis.

Unfortunately, the strategy was short-lived. The GC quickly caught on, and began employing dedicated hunter groups to seek out the scouts and destroy them. These groups were highly efficient at detecting and killing the Imperium's limited supply of frigates, but at the same time were too small to warrant larger fleets jumping in to save the lone frigates. Very soon, the Imperium found itself back at square one.

The frigate shown here is adorned with a large animal skull. While the ceremonial practice was quite popular before the war period, it quickly became impractical to purchase the ornaments for all of the Imperium's light warships. After a decade had passed, the practice had mostly died out.

This was a small, quick build for a contest, but it turned out well I think. My favorite thing is the Bionicle armor shell piece on the front, which I was originally gonna try and use as a command bridge structure (like the actual command bridge), but it didn't work. So then I thought, "Y'know what? That looks sorta like a skull..." And voila! Imperial ships are now accessorized with giant alien skulls.
