Duck Sunset

This picture of the Albemarle Sound was taken in Duck, North Carolina. The Albemarle sound is part of the Albemarle- Pamlico sound system that makes up the second largest estuary in the United States, behind the Chesapeake Bay. This estuary is home to over 75 species of fish, birds, and shellfish. It provides invaluable nursery regions. Some species, such as striped bass (Morone saxatilis), use the estuary to spawn and then swim back into the ocean. Nurseries are essential in providing small, young fish with places to grow, hide, and survive. Not only is the estuary critical to fish species, but also human economy. This region provides great fishing spots that stimulate and support the local seafood industry, which in turn improves economy.
