Abandoned Wing Bone

At our most recent beach sweep for the Surfrider Foundation on Wrightsville Beach NC, we not only recovered a copious amount of marine debris and plastics but I found this skeleton in between a group of sea oats. After researching what structure the bone is and more importantly the taxonomy I've narrowed it down to a Pelican wing more surprisingly a ulna or part of the Sesamoid bone, this was a mature bird from the mere size and fragility of the bone.

Pelicans and other marine birds are a vital part to our biome and coastal ecosystem from pollination of plants to the symbiosis of keeping other plants and species at an equal balance for the food web to stay continually connected.
