Dehiscence complete
Dehiscence is complete for these slime mold fruiting bodies of Metatrichia vesparium. The capillitium, or the orange fibrous material, has pushed all of the caps off of the peridia, leaving behind what look like paper wasp nests as at upper left. The capillitium strands are actually each a helical structure of multiple smaller strands. They have remarkable elastic elongation. Found in the Moraine Nature Preserve.
Photographed using a Nikkor 85mm f/2.8 tilt shift lens on a Sony A7R with a Sony flash.
