The Sun Sets on the Virginia Creeper
The sun hangs low over the countryside outside Abingdon, Virginia. Mixed train 202 is returning from a day on the Abindgon Branch, or as it is locally called, 'the Virginia Creeper.' The train is scheduled to arrive back in Abingdon at 3:10 p.m., but a higher than usual volume of freight being handled pushed the time back about 90 minutes.
This image was created as part of a Lerro Productions photo charter on the Strasburg Railroad. If not for the modern vehicles in the background, this could easily have been autumn of 1956. The engine is not the real 382, of course, as the engine was scrapped is 1958 (the 'jewelry' of which was fittingly given to O. Winston Link). For a day, 475 was dressed as her long-deceased sister before going in for her 1472 day inspection.
