Abingdon Rocket

Mixed train 201 bolts out of yard at Bristol, VA just before dawn in the autumn of 1956. The train is scheduled to arrive at Abingdon station, some 15 miles down the Radford Division, in time to make a 7:30 a.m. departure for West Jefferson. The 15 mile trip between Bristol to Abingdon would be, at best, the fastest speed 201/202 would reach, as the speeds on the branch were limited, giving the line its nickname, "The Virginia Creeper." The train's scheduled return to Abingdon is at 3:10 p.m., but it may come later depending on the volume of freight on any given day.

This 30 second exposure was taken as part of a Lerro Productions photo charter on the Strasburg Railroad. The engine is not the real 382, of course, as the engine was scrapped is 1958 (the 'jewelry' of which was given to O. Winston Link). For a day, 475 was dressed as her long-deceased sister before going in for her 1472 day inspection.
