Ridiculously overengineered

The Forth Bridge is a way larger structure than it needs to be. The reason for this is that after the Tay Bridge in nearby Dundee collapsed, the public didn't trust big bridges any more. So engineers John Fowler and Benjamin Baker were tasked to design a bridge that would reinstate the trust of passengers through it's look alone.
