State leaders reach consensus on Long Island water quality program

By Michael Gormley michael.gormley@newsday.com “A Senate report released last year after months of public hearings found 360,000 homes in Suffolk County alone don’t have municipal sewers and that causes about 70 percent of the nitrogen pollution in the area’s waterways. The nitrogen from septic systems leads to algal blooms that cut oxygen in the water, killing fish and reducing plant life in coastal marshes, which help protect Long Islanders against severe waves and flooding, the report found.”

News from the Gov’s Office

“More work remains to be done to prepare young New Yorkers entering the workforce for emerging job opportunities in clean energy and construction of green infrastructure, especially in those areas most vulnerable to climate change, like neighborhoods at an elevated risk of flooding.”

NY DEC

“In vulnerable areas, coastal erosion causes extensive damage to public and private property and to natural resources and endangers human lives. This has resulted in significant economic losses to individuals, private businesses and the state's economy. Coastal erosion damage has necessitated large public expenditures to remove debris and ruined structures, and to replace essential public facilities and services.”
