Hunt the Wren in the Isle of Man

Hunt the Wren in Port St Mary, Isle of Man, 2022.

Hunt the Wren is the traditional Manx custom for the morning of St. Stephen's Day (26 December).

Dancing around the wren pole and singing a song about the wren as 'the king of all birds.'

These photographs were commissioned by Culture Vannin and taken by Brook Wassall.

They are offered as a startling presentation of an ancient Manx custom which is thriving all over the Isle of Man today.
