The Karina
In 1914, the Karina was comandeered by the Royal Navy, went to Scotland and was at the surrender of the German fleet at Scapaflow, a brass plate was inserted in the deck to commemorate this. In 1939, she was once again called up for war service and spent the war years as a minesweeper guarding The Mersey, she was painted 'filthy grey' and had to be completely repainted by Wally on her return. After a couple of post war unsuccessful seasons, the Karina Co. was disbanded and she was bought by Wally Shimmin. It was then sold on to Kenneth Garret and then CM Watterson who both intended to use it for trips but neither of them were able to get a license due to the condition of the boat. The Karina lay for many years neglected at Castletown and then was bought by a Mr Hobson who spent many years sailing at Port Soderick with Wally, he bought her and was doing her up on the Manchester Ship Canal, in 1972 Mr Hobson invited Ann Pickering to view the Karina but he died suddenly before Miss Pickering was able to go over and visit. This photo is of the Karina rotting in Penryn in Wales in the 1990's. Captain Carter tried unsuccessfully to buy her but authorities said she wasn't seaworthy and so unfortunately that plan fell through.
