Burning the Buitch, 2019

Burn the Buitch is a Manx tradition for Oie Voaldyn (30 April), when a gorse bush is burning on your land in order to ward off evil spirits.

Accounts of this go back hundreds of years and fire in one form or other at Oie Voaldyn go back as far as records exist for the Isle of Man.

This picture was taken in 2019 in German Parish, where the tradition is still carried out by a small number of people.
