Edward Forbes
Edward Forbes (1815-1854), ground-breaking Manx naturalist and poet, who died tragically young.
In 1844 he was appointed Government Palaeontologist on the Geological Survey, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geological Society, of which Society, in 1853, he became President. In the following year, at the age of 39, he was elected to the Professorship of Natural History in the University of Edinburgh – one of the highest positions a scientist could have at that time. It was only a few months after this that he died.
A short biography of Forbes is available, along with some of his poetry, on the Manx Literature website: manxliterature.com/sort-by-genre/genre/a-book-of-manx-poe...
