Paul Lebiedzinski, Manx poet, 1951 - 1995

One of the Isle of Man's most brilliant, exciting and important poets; Paul Lebiedzinski.

This picture was taken by Enid Church (née Broderick) outside the Plough in Ramsey at Easter 1991.

Paul Lebiedzinski, son of a Polish Air Force pilot stationed at Jurby, was born and raised in Ramsey amongst his Manx family and community. By the 1970s, then in his 20s, Lebiedzinski had settled into the day-job as a gardener, but in the evenings he gained a legendary reputation for his thrilling performances of poetry in pubs and gatherings around the Island.

He died young, having never brought his poetry together to be published in a book. The only access to his legacy is through recordings made of his performances in the 1970s and 80s.

These were released as 'Six Foot Under' on cassette tape after his death in 1995, and they were released online by Culture Vannin to mark the anniversary of his birthday in 2017:
