T. E. Brown: The Manx National Poet
The Manx National Poet, T. E. Brown, in around the 1880s.
The author of poems such as Betsy Lee from his 'Fo'c's'le Yarns' series came to be regarded as not just the Isle of Man's greatest poet, but perhaps the exemplar of all that was good about things Manx. Hall Caine described him in the following way:
“the greatest man, the finest brain, the noblest heart, the largest nature that we can yet call Manx.”
He is photographed here during his time as a Master at Clifton College, from which he retired to return to the Isle of Man in 1982.
This is a copy of the picture which hangs in all of the primary schools in the Isle of Man. It was first presented by the Manx Language Society in 1914 under the impetus of Sophia Morrison. The pictures were reprinted and reinstated by the Department of Education and Children in 2015.
