Bishop Thomas Wilson (1663-1755)

It is said that the entirety of the Isle of Man came to the funeral of this person in 1755: Bishop Thomas Wilson.

He did an enormous amount for the people of the Isle of Man during his 58 years as Bishop, even spending time in prison in the process!

Bishop Wilson improved agriculture, reformed land law, started the translation of the Bible into Manx, built churches, issued medicine, and even found time to write of history of the Island.

It was written of him that there was...

"none at once so exalted in station and so saintly in character, so active and so tried in his lifetime, and so influential in his works, as Bishop Wilson."

Dy jarroo!
