Javan Leopard - Java-Leopard
The Java Leopard (Panthera pardus melas) is the smallest subspecies of the leopard. Its distribution area is located on the Indonesian island of Java. It once extended over the entire island and some small neighboring islands. The Java Leopard is today threatened with extinction, the total stock in the wild includes probably less than 250 animals, possibly even less than 100.
Of other leopard subspecies, the Java Leopard differs by its smaller physique, a dense, short coat and small, closely spaced, black rosettes. Its coat color varies from ocher yellow to reddish brown. In this subspecies is black fur very common, so-called Panther, this color form is recessively inherited further.
The Java Leopard occupies a special position among the leopards, because according to recent studies, it forms the sister line to all other Asian leopards, making him at the same time the most original representative of all leopard subspecies. This is due to isolation on Java.

Es erstreckte sich einst über die gesamte Insel und einige kleine Nachbarinseln. Der Java Leopard ist heute vom Aussterben bedroht, der Gesamtbestand in der Wildnis umfasst wahrscheinlich weniger als 250 Tiere, möglicherweise sogar weniger als 100.
Von anderen Leoparden-Unterarten unterscheidet sich der Java-Leopard durch seinen kleineren Körperbau, einen dichten, kurzen Mantel und kleine, eng beabstandete, schwarze Rosetten. Die Fellfarbe variiert von Ockergelb bis Rotbraun. In dieser Unterart kommt sehr häufig ein schwarzes Fell vor, sogenannte Panther, diese Farbform wird rezessiv weiter vererbt.
Der Java Leopard nimmt unter den Leoparden eine Sonderstellung ein, da er nach neueren Studien die Schwesterlinie zu allen anderen asiatischen Leoparden bildet und damit gleichzeitig der ursprünglichste Vertreter aller Leoparden-Unterarten ist. Dies liegt an der Isolation auf Java.
