Little Egret

New Zealand has few egrets, but I saw a couple of Little Egrets at the Ashley-Rakahuri Estuary. Because I was in New Zealand during the austral spring, this bird had nuptial plumes. Egrets were almost wiped out more than a century ago. Hunters killed the birds so that the plumes could be used to decorate women's hats.
