Kea Sign
Arthur's Pass also has signs telling people not to feed the Keas. The signs are useless, because people need to protect their food so the Kea will not steal it. At least a half a dozen Kea hung around the outdoor tables at the main eatery in Arthur's Pass, harassing diners and trying to steal food. My guide Steve bought a custard square, and a Kea managed to steal some of it. A guy next to me had a meat pie, and a Kea got some of that as well. The Kea work the tables in groups, and I subsequently heard stories about Kea knocking over people's drinks, and when people reach for the tumbling cup, the Kea grab their food. They seemed somewhere between endearing and thuggish.
