Red-crowned Parakeet

Red-crowned Parakeets are one of the species almost wiped out by stoats and other predators. They feed on the ground and were easy prey. Paul Newport, whose home I visited in Hinewai on the Banks Peninsula, has a permit to raise them. He has an aviary with four parakeets, and he let me go in to feed them. The birds preferred the seeds of the kiwifruit to the flesh. I took this photo with only my right hand, because my left hand was occupied.
