Royal Spoonbill
Spoonbills are related to ibises. The Royal Spoonbill is the only spoonbill species found in New Zealand. Many were in breeding plumage, with long white plumes sticking out the back of their head. Some of these breeding birds had a somewhat crazed appearance. Spoonbills feed by swinging their long spoon-shaped bill back and forth in the water, hoping to find food to snap up. The Spanish word for spoonbill is espatula.
