Westland Petrel
Westland Petrels are all dark seabirds who were fairly common on the Kaikoura pelagic trip. They are much smaller than the albatrosses and giant petrels, and they tended to stay on the outskirts of the area where birds were fighting over the bag of fish. As with all birds who spend much of their lives in bodies of saltwater, they have a device on their bill to filter out salt from the water they drink.
