Kokako
One of the rare birds on the predator-free island of Tiritiri Matangi is the North Island Kokako. They are chicken-sized birds who can be difficult to find, but on my first visit to the island, this Kokako hopped onto a water trough and then foraged in nearby low trees. Kokako are in the wattlebird family, and you can see the blue wattles on the bird's face. The South Island Kokako has not been seen in many years and might be extinct.
