White-capped Albatross, Northern Giant Petrel, Cape Petrels
One can see seabirds in New Zealand by going on a pelagic trip (a boat trip offshore). I took a pelagic trip out of Kaikoura, which is on the east coast of the South Island. Kaikoura in Maori means "lobster food", because Maori people who lived there found crustaceans to eat. A lot of seabirds came close to our boat. The dark bird in front is a Northern Giant Petrel. The large white bird behind the giant petrel is a White-capped Albatross, who used to be called the Shy Albatross. The small birds in the back are Cape Petrels.
