The day after I arrive in Pisa in 2017, the Dalai Lama gave an address. He spoke in English about how materialism contributes to fear, anger, and distrust. Someone on stage who had a copy of the speech periodically translated for Italians who did not understand English. Before his talk, the Dalai Lama sat on the stage with a small white towel on his head to provide shade from the sun. He then put on a red Pisa baseball cap which did NOT say "Make Pisa Great Again". The Dalai Lama believes in kindness, a quality that is becoming increasingly rare in the United States.
