A Violent Neighborhood
The Loggia del Lanzi in Florence features Benvenuto Cellini's bronze sculpture of Perseus holding the head of the Gorgon Medusa while stepping on her headless corpse. Behind Perseus on the left is a statue with Achilles called the Rape of Polyxena. Behind Achilles and Perseus are statues of Sabine women, some of whom are being raped in a statue off to the right. The area also has a statue with Hercules, who is frequently depicted committing acts of violence.
