Hippogriff

On top of a column above the Pisa Cathedral is a replica of a large sculpture of a hippogriff, which is half griffin and half horse. The original sculpture, now in the Cathedral Museum, is thought to be 900 years old. A griffin is a mythical creature with the front of an eagle and the back of a lion, so I am not sure which parts are supposed to go where when you throw a horse into the equation. Harry Potter made hippogriffs more popular, although he said that a hippogriff was half horse and half eagle. The one in Pisa looks like a stocky horse with wings and an eagle mask.
