The Loves of Jupiter

Jupiter was the Roman name for the Greek god Zeus, and this headboard at the Bargello in Florence depicts some of his many loves. The person for whom the headboard was created must have had a large ego. This portion shows Jupiter in the form of a bull with Europa, the mother of King Minos of Crete. The continent of Europe was named after her, and Zeus succeeded in bringing about a European union.
