Greater Flamingos and Pied Avocets

The first flamingo I saw was flying, with its legs and neck both stretched out, forming a distinctive profile. In this photo, swimming behind the flamingos were Pied Avocets, a species I had never before seen. They are black-and-white shorebirds with a bill that curves upward. They were the focus of a major conservation effort in Britain in the 1940s, and an avocet is the symbol for Britain's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
