Leafcutter Ant Damage

When in Costa Rican rain forests, one sometimes encounters lines of leafcutter ants carrying pieces of vegetation. One also can see the outside of their colonies, some of which can be quite large. Leafcutter ants seem fairly harmless, unless you are a plant. You can see that the two top leaves have not been damaged, but the bottom leaf has been extensively cut by the ants.
