Resplendent Quetzal
The Resplendent Quetzal possesses a magic that transcends the bird world. The quetzal is the national emblem of Guatemala and the name for the Guatemalan unit of currency. An Aztec deity called Quetzalcoatl (which means quetzal serpent) is a god of peace. In some cultures, only royalty and nobles have been allowed to wear quetzal feathers. The bird is fourteen inches long, but some males have two bright-green plumes that extend another two feet beyond their tail. As with the peacock, the showy plumes are actually feathers above the tail rather than tail feathers.
