Rock Ptarmigans

Near the airport south of Reykjavik, we saw a flock of 19 Rock Ptarmigans flush by the side of the road. It was one of the species I most wanted to see on the trip. These chicken-sized birds are mottled brown on top and white on the flanks. When they land, they disappear into the ground. Had we not seen exactly where they alit, we might not have been able to relocate and photograph them.
