Audubon's Shearwater

Shearwaters get their name from the way they fly over the ocean and seem to shear the tops of the waves with the tip of their wing. We saw a lot of Audubon's Shearwaters doing this around South Plaza Island, and some of the shearwaters perched in openings between the rocks. While we were on the island, we saw Audubon's Shearwaters flying over some of the paths. Shearwaters are pelagic birds, which means they spend most of their time at sea, and I had never before seen them flying over land.
