Montezuma Oropendola

My favorite blackbirds on the trip were the oropendolas. At Chan Chich, I visited a colony of Montezuma Oropendolas. These nine-syllable birds were displaying and building nests. The nest is a large hanging sack that functions like an incubator. There are leaves in the bottom, and after the eggs are laid, the female does not spend much time sitting on them.
