Cattle Egrets
Cattle Egrets are common birds in agricultural areas. They follow livestock, eating the insects disturbed by the hooves of the animals. The egrets in the fields have a yellowish tinge to their feathers. But male Cattle Egrets in their breeding colonies are beautiful birds. They have lavender skin around the eye and a red bill tipped in yellow. They also have a profusion of plumes on their head and breast. Egrets were called “aigrettes” in the 1500s, and the same word was used to describe the long breeding plumes of the adult birds.
