Groove-billed Ani

The ani is best known as a crossword puzzle answer to the clue "cuckoo." Anis are in the cuckoo family, but they are communitarian nesters rather than parasitic nesters. The Smooth-billed and the Groove-billed Anis are difficult to tell apart in the field. If you look closely at the bill of this Groove-billed Ani on the Pacific coast of Panama, you can see some grooves.
