Bananas
Before I went to any tropical habitats, friends told me that tree-ripened bananas taste much better than the bananas we buy in US stores. After tasting bananas in the tropics, I can say that they taste a little better, but not better enough to get excited about. When I stayed at Rancho Naturalista in Costa Rica, I commented one day at breakfast that I was surprised they did not offer bananas with breakfast when I saw so many being put on the feeders for birds and other animals. The food at Rancho Naturalista is first-rate, and a member of the staff laughed at my comment. She said that Costa Ricans consider bananas to be "poor people's food", which is why Rancho Naturalista does not serve them to guests.
