Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
One of the most spectacular groups of Neotropical birds is the cotingas. Some are big, colorful, and sometimes wonderfully weird. An example is this Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. I left at 4:45 one morning to visit a cock-of-the-rock lek on the property of Angel Paz's on the West slope of the Andes. Lek comes from a Swedish word and literally means play, and it is an area where the males of some species gather to sing and dance and try to attract females. The males squawk and display within a 20 meter area, hoping that a female will come in to mate.
