White-bellied Spider Monkey
One day at Chan Chich, we saw a troop of White-bellied Spider Monkeys crashing through the palm trees. They are acrobatic, using their long arms to swing on branches like trapeze artists. Each adult weighs about 17 pounds, about the same as one of the howler monkeys. A number of times, one of the spider monkeys stopped either directly above us or very close. The spider monkeys are much more aggressive than the howlers and are known to kill others of their kind if one tries to wander through the area of another group.
