Hood Mockingbird

The islands in the Galapagos have both a Spanish and an English name. The island of Hispaniola is also known as the island of Hood and is home to the Hood Mockingbird. This species has a much nastier edge than the Northern Mockingbird I see near my home. I saw a sea lion with a wound, and a Hood Mockingbird was pecking at the raw sea lion flesh that looked like freshly ground beef. These birds are known to drink the blood and eat the flesh of living animals, because there is little water on the island. They are not afraid of people, and some hopped right up to me. Others busily dug in the sand.
