The Aft of The Dursley
My first photography outing since the beginning of January, and since my heart procedure in June. I had never been to this location but it seemed interesting, and good for some gentle photography. This is the Purton "Ship's Graveyard" near the village of Purton on the banks of the River Severn. To the South is the port of Sharpness, which provides access to a non-tidal canal leading the the old commercial docks in the city of Gloucester. In about 1909, coastal erosion led to concern over the barrier between the coast and the canal, so nearly 70 ships (at last count) were deliberately beached and allowed to fill with silt to provide a coastal defence against the erosion. Many of the visible remains of the vessels stand proud of the ground like tombstones - very fitting given the nature of the place. And the textures of the grasses and against the structures, I thought, made for better monochrome images than colour. This vessel was known as a dock lighter - a flat bottomed barge used to transfer goods from moored ships - and was built in 1926 in Gloucester. It was beached sometime around 1963. Fujifilm X-T30, Viltrox AF 13mm f1.4 XF - ISO200/f9/1/200sec.
