Sally (King)

My first photography outing since the beginning of January, and since my heart procedure in June. I had never been to this location but it seemed interesting, and good for some gentle photography. This is the Purton "Ship's Graveyard" near the village of Purton on the banks of the River Severn. To the South is the port of Sharpness, which provides access to a non-tidal canal leading the the old commercial docks in the city of Gloucester. In about 1909, coastal erosion led to concern over the barrier between the coast and the canal, so nearly 70 ships (at last count) were deliberately beached and allowed to fill with silt to provide a coastal defence against the erosion. Many of the visible remains of the vessels stand proud of the ground like tombstones - very fitting given the nature of the place. This is the Sally (possibly King) and, despite little known historical data, it is thought that this schooner had been built in Middlesbrough in 1884, and was beached at this location in 1951. This image is taken from "inside" what would have been a covered storage hold. Fujifilm X-T30 - Fujinon XF 10-24mm f4 R OIS - ISO160/f13/13secs.
