Not Just Hair, Locs

Hair can represent so much growth. It instills wisdom, it can change you.

Why, you may wonder? Because of all the care and upkeep that you have to do to it. The wealth that it takes to maintain it. Essentially as your hair grows longer, you in turn are reaping the benefits of such growth, day by day. The head is sometimes referred to as the crown and like the crown we all have our own that we must bear. That is important for us to realize.

This is my friend Louis that I have known for a little over 3 years and although he started his loc journey long before I walked into his life, I was still fortunate enough to witness some of his growth and was able to see that wisdom shine through his crown.

It brings me great sadness to know that his loc journey has began to reach its end. Almost a decade just gone. I have shared photos of Louis with you all before, trying to document as much as I can amount this man who is not only a powerful and masterful photographer in his own right, but also a hometown hero that seeks to change his own community having battled homelessness and other fights.

These are some of the last photos of him with his locs and beard that hold so much. Because he will be started chemotherapy soon due to Lymphoma, he has decided to shave it all off before it falls out due to the medication. And I can't say that I blame him fo doing so. As a black man, myself I know just how special our hair is. And not just anyone can touch it. But just because we lose our hair and enter into a new journey that does not mean we lose all of our strength, knowledge, wisdom and guidance that those strands have brought to us.

As my friend enters his next battle, if you find it in your hearts to give, please do so. He needs all the support, love, care, and protection that he deserves because he is just that worth despite it feeling like his world just falling apart. I know emotionally, mentally and spiritually, having cancer is such a scary obstacle, but Louis I hope that you see these photos a realize that you got this and it is also my hope that others out there see what I see, life, still inside of you even with all the pain.

Love you and keep fighting.
