Layton railway station. 2011

Layton railway station from the new footbridge 120A. Thursday 15 September 2011.

The footbridge was placed into position on Sunday 05 May 2011 and the bridge opened on Sunday 17 July 2011. The original footbridge closed on Saturday 16 July 2011. The steps were removed on Sunday 17 July 2011. The pedestrian walkway over the tracks was removed during the early hours of Monday 18 July 2011.

In 1932 the level crossing on Bispham Road at Bispham railway station (later renamed Layton) was removed and all vehicular traffic was re-routed over a new road named Plymouth Road. Included in the new length of road was a large over-bridge located at the eastern end of the railway station. At the same time to maintain a pedestrian right of way for people using Bispham Road a footbridge was built where the level crossing had been located.

In 2010 it was decided to replace the 1932 footbridge with a new structure as the existing bridge had become life expired and it was also too low to provide the clearance required for the overhead wires when the Preston to Blackpool line is electrified within the next few years.
