New tram rails stored adjacent to Blackpool North railway station. 2018
New tram rails stored adjacent to Blackpool North railway station. Friday 18 May 2018.
The tram rails from Germany are for the 2nd generation tramway extension to North Station were unloaded on to the former track bed approach to platforms 1 – 6 of the second Blackpool North station which closed in 1973 and was demolished in 1974.
The new tramway from North Pier / Talbot Square to Blackpool North railway station was due to be to open in May 2019. Unfortunately this has been delayed possibly to 2022 due to a replacement Wilko (Wilkinson) store on Coronation Street not yet being built (construction was due to start in December 2017). The current Wilko which was originally built as a ‘Fine Fare’ supermarket in 1977 is to be demolished to make way for a new tram station and hotel that will be linked to the main entrance of Blackpool North by an existing subway being rebuilt twice as wide.
