Sunrise with Upper Light Pillar

www.meteoros.de/themen/halos/haloarten/ee08/

An Upper Light Pillar some seconds before sunrise. The atmospheric phenomen occurs when there are ice crystals in the form of platelets or columns in the air. The light column is created by reflecting the sunlight on the base surfaces of rotating plates and on the prism surfaces of rotating columns. The prerequisite, however, is that the ice crystals vibrate around their vertical axis. In addition, snow stars can also create a pillar of light. The creation of the column is comparable to the path of light that the setting sun creates on a billowing surface of water.
