Self Perception Sketchbook

Currently I am focusing on the theme of self-perception - how we view our physical selves differently by various means making us unable to refer to any source as truly reliable. Despite our awareness of this, we still base our opinions of ourselves and often our self-worth on these sources as we build up an idea of what we look like and who we are, which may or may not be accurate. We observe ourselves in many ways, watching our body and aesthetics alter and shift throughout our lives, mostly beyond our control.

I have gathered various imagery; flipping images and using distorted mirrors to look at how easily our perception of ourselves can be altered. I am currently exploring this theme through sculpture looking at the idea of a second skin as can be seen in the sketchbook scans above. I am experimenting with creating something which I can attach to the body to explore symmetry in the human form.

I have researched artists such as Louise Bourgeois as she isolates aspects of the human form in a fascinating way, often distorting them highlighting the function of the form and how exposure of the body can affect the way in which it is perceived. I have referenced FKA Twigs also as she uses her body throughout cross platform work, twisting and contorting it pushing physical boundaries.
