Sericomyia silentis - the Yellow Barred Bog (or Peat) Hoverfly.

A very large black and yellow wasp mimic - hoverfly.

About 15mm length. Harmless.

 

Prefers purple flowers such as knapweeds and thistles.

Observed on Common Knapweed in the Wild Flower Meadow, newly opened and heavy with white pollen granules.

 

My shadow with the long lens (140mm equivalence) at minimum focal distance (1.3 m), resting on a monopod, is seen on the Hoverfly’s dorsal thorax
