Dark Green Fritillary - probably male (from the restless flight behaviour).

Observed on Common Knapweed - Centaurea nigra - which is in flower, for the first time this year, in the last few days. Very fast in flight.

Strong breeze blowing and our Wild Flower Meadow is quite exposed to the winds from the west. The Fritillaries landing only for 2-3 seconds on each flower head, but if one is patient they will return to the same flower in about 5 minutes, during which time I hold the AF on the flower. The grasses are a nuisance however when blowing across the AF sensor - single tiny square selected, CAF, single image. 1140mm equivalence, handheld.

It is said to be fond of long grass wild flower meadows that have not been improved ( had chemicals added). And that is exactly where I observed - I estimate - four individuals today.
