Male Common Hawker. Large creature - with a few others in flight nearby. Body length 70mm, full forewing span 90mm.

This specimen was dead on the Reraig Forest track when I found it. Quite possibly a bird or bat strike. The underside of the eyes and the thorax were quite damaged. I carried it home, gave it a slight wash and dried it with aerosol compressed air, to assess its value for the camera.

Photographed against the surface of a riven quartz tile. Focus stacked in camera.

The larval stage extends over at least three seasons - overwintering in two winters. Quite a delicate start in life.
